ANNE FRANK - An Ordinary girl with an extraordinary mind

Writer: Sujitha TamilselvamSujitha Tamilselvam

She was brave, smarter for her age, optimistic and she was able to look past her difficulties. The Holocaust and the Era of Hitler was a dark age in history. As a person who was born and grew up in such a period of time, Anne is inspirational and there is a lot to learn from her life. So what is special about her? what is the extraordinary thing she did ? To be honest she was just another regular teenage girl but what makes her stand out in history is that the circumstances under which she lived in better terms, survived. When I first read her book it was just another diary of a young girl, who had the usual expectations, feelings of any girl of her age. In her early years she had a comfortable home, caring parents, a loving sister and enough number of friends but what makes her extraordinary is how she continued to be the same person even after her family went into hiding for 2 years. The maturity she exhibits in her days during the hiding period is something even an adult would lack.

In her diary she mentions how lucky she is still to be alive and to have food and shelter, while compared to people who didn’t have such an opportunity and she even felt guilty about it. But not once she complained about her life and the circumstances she was put under. I feel that teaches us a big lesson, which is to appreciate the life we are living today, as a human it is natural to desire for a better life, we keep striving for it every single day for our entire life, in this process we fail to appreciate how fortunate we are to to be where we are, the life you live today, things you take for granted is a big dream for someone.

This is an important lesson Anne teaches the world, she always had hope which kept her going, days before she was captured by the Nazis she writes in her diary that she wants her name to be remembered in the history and she was confident she is going to do that one day, she shouldn’t have had the slightest clue that the diary in which she was writing that wish is going to bring her what she dreamt of.

We all know her story did not have a happy ending, which breaks our heart. But Anne has made us realize and appreciate the life we are gifted with, either it be long or short, rich or poor be thankful that you are alive today and always hope for a better tomorrow.

Her family was believed to be taken by the Nazis in the march of 1945, after which her whereabouts and the process of her death is less known. It is also believed that the secret stay of her family in the Annex was tipped off to the Nazis by one of the employees in the building in which she was hiding, who did it for a ransom. Proving once again the worst enemy of mankind is mankind. If only, that person hadn’t done so, Anne wouldn’t have been taken and I always wonder what kind of a writer she should have grown up to be…..
